The most common cause is the bacterium Bartonella henselae. Cats often carry it without symptoms, and kittens may have higher carriage rates. Cats typically acquire it through fleas, so flea control is a key prevention measure. Note that other bacteria can cause wound infections after cat bites (e.g., Pasteurella species), so local wound infection signs may require separate evaluation.
