Can juvenile arthritis turn into rheumatoid arthritis?

JIA does not automatically “turn into” adult RA in all cases, but in some patients—depending on subtype—an inflammatory arthritis pattern can persist into adulthood. In polyarticular and RF-positive patterns, the phenotype can resemble adult RA more closely. This is often better understood as continuity of inflammatory disease biology rather than a sudden transformation. Discontinuing follow-up or therapy during the transition to adulthood can increase flare risk and functional decline.

That is why transition care is a strategic step: a planned handover from pediatric to adult rheumatology, sustained treat-to-target goals, and uninterrupted monitoring. The goal is to maintain control in adulthood, minimizing joint damage and protecting long-term quality of life.
