Does ferritin cause hair loss?
Low ferritin may be associated with hair loss in some individuals. This is especially relevant in women with diffuse thinning, weaker hair strands, or increased shedding, where ferritin is commonly checked. The reason is that hair follicles also need adequate iron reserves for healthy growth. However, not every case of hair loss is caused by low ferritin. Thyroid disease, stress, hormonal changes, genetic predisposition, vitamin deficiencies, and dermatologic conditions can all contribute. So when ferritin is low, it should not automatically be assumed to be the only cause of hair loss, but it can be an important contributing factor. The best approach is to evaluate hair loss comprehensively and review ferritin as one part of the broader picture.
