Does ferritin deficiency make you sleepy?
Low ferritin can make some people feel sleepy, drained, or low in energy during the day. While this is often described as “making you sleepy,” the underlying issue is usually reduced energy availability and lower overall performance rather than directly increasing sleep itself. A person may feel drowsy, unmotivated, or unrefreshed even after waking up. However, daytime sleepiness should not automatically be blamed on low ferritin alone. Sleep apnea, insufficient sleep, depression, thyroid problems, and other deficiencies can produce a similar pattern. If ferritin is low and a person feels unusually sleepy, the situation should be evaluated in a broader context. So yes, low ferritin can feel like it is “making you sleepy,” but it is not always the only explanation.
