What happens if cat scratch fever is left untreated?
Many cases may improve without specific therapy, but some untreated cases can develop complications such as lymph node suppuration, prolonged fever, or—more rarely—eye or liver/spleen involvement. Immunocompromised individuals carry a higher risk of systemic disease. Therefore, “it will always go away on its own” is not universally safe. If symptoms are significant, persistent, or if risk factors exist, clinician-guided evaluation and monitoring is the safer strategy.
