What does viral pneumonia mean?
Viral pneumonia means the pneumonia is caused by a virus rather than bacteria. Influenza, RSV, adenovirus, and certain coronaviruses can lead to viral pneumonia. The infection can trigger widespread lung inflammation, producing cough, fever, shortness of breath, and fatigue. Antibiotics do not treat viruses, so care is often supportive—hydration, rest, fever control, and oxygen when needed. However, secondary bacterial pneumonia can develop after a viral illness. Worsening symptoms, new purulent sputum, or persistent high fever should prompt clinical reassessment to rule out bacterial superinfection.
