Why does lymph node swelling happen in cat scratch disease?
The bacteria can travel from the entry site through lymphatic channels to a nearby lymph node. Because lymph nodes are key immune response centers, inflammation develops there, leading to enlargement and tenderness. Swelling often improves over time but can last for weeks. Marked redness, warmth, or a fluctuant feel may suggest suppuration (pus) and requires evaluation. The goal is to manage complications and rule out other causes that can mimic this presentation.
