Are orthopedic pillows healthy?
Orthopedic pillows are generally considered healthy and supportive when properly selected for the individual’s height and firmness needs. Benefits come from maintaining neutral cervical alignment, improving pressure distribution, and reducing overnight muscle tension. However, the “orthopedic” label alone is not a guarantee: wrong loft, overly firm materials, or aggressive contouring can worsen alignment and symptoms. A 3–10 day adaptation period is common, but a clear increase in pain usually indicates a poor match. The most practical health markers are reduced morning pain, easier neck mobility during the day, and fewer sleep interruptions.
