What is clascoterone?
Clascoterone is a topical (skin-applied) anti-androgen. Its main goal is to reduce androgen signaling locally by acting at the androgen receptor level in target tissues such as sebaceous glands and the follicular unit. In acne, this may help reduce excess sebum activity and inflammation. The key distinction is that topical anti-androgens aim to work primarily at the skin level rather than “changing systemic hormones.” In practice, treatment selection depends on acne severity, skin sensitivity, patient history, and how it fits with other therapies. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a history of severe skin reactions, or use other medications, clinical guidance is recommended. Best outcomes typically require consistent application, barrier-supportive skincare, and proactive irritation management.
