What should ferritin be during pregnancy?

Ferritin requires special attention during pregnancy because iron demand increases significantly. The baby’s development, the placenta, and the increase in maternal blood volume can consume iron stores more quickly. For that reason, ferritin in pregnancy should not be viewed as just a lab number; it should be interpreted together with symptoms, hemoglobin, and the stage of pregnancy. Giving one universal “ideal number” can be misleading because laboratory ranges and clinical targets may differ. However, low ferritin during pregnancy can increase the risk of fatigue, weakness, and iron deficiency anemia. That is why ferritin should ideally be checked early in pregnancy or even before conception when possible. If needed, appropriate iron support can be started and monitored under medical guidance.
