What should people with osteoporosis avoid eating?
In osteoporosis, the focus is less on a strict “forbidden list” and more on reducing patterns that accelerate bone loss. First: excessive sodium—very salty/processed foods can increase calcium loss. Second: heavy alcohol use—harms calcium balance and increases fall risk. Third: excessive caffeine—especially when calcium intake is low; moderate intake is often acceptable. Fourth: chronically low protein—insufficient protein promotes muscle loss, raises fall risk, and increases fracture risk. Also, cola-type beverages and overall ultra-processed patterns (low micronutrients, low fiber) are not ideal. The objective is not fear-based restriction but building a bone-supportive system: adequate calcium + vitamin D + protein, resistance training, and balance work. If you are on osteoporosis medications, align nutrition with the treatment plan.
