What are atorvastatin medications used for?

Atorvastatin medications are used to lower LDL, known as bad cholesterol, and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases. They may be prescribed for people with high cholesterol, atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, diabetes-related heart risk, or a high risk of heart attack. Atorvastatin works by reducing cholesterol production in the liver. This may help slow plaque buildup in the arteries and lower the long-term risk of heart attack and stroke. It should only be used under medical supervision.
