What is a mineral imbalance?
A mineral imbalance means a mineral level falls below normal (deficiency), rises above normal (excess), or the ratio between minerals becomes disrupted. Electrolyte disturbances (sodium/potassium) can occur acutely and may require urgent care. Excess supplementation can also create problems: too much zinc can induce copper deficiency; excess magnesium is riskier in impaired kidney function; inappropriate iron may cause adverse effects. Therefore, “mineral disorder” is not only “low levels,” but also “too high” or “wrong balance.” Clinicians evaluate imbalances in context of diet, medications, kidney/endocrine function, and absorption issues.\n\nSource note: NIH ODS safety and interaction guidance across mineral fact sheets.
