Why does reflux occur at a young age?
Reflux is not only an “older adult” problem; it can be common in younger people due to modern lifestyle patterns. Irregular meals, fast eating, late-night snacking, high caffeine/energy drink intake, smoking/vaping, and stress can impair LES function and gastric emptying. Obesity or rapid weight gain increases intra-abdominal pressure and facilitates reflux. Certain medications and anatomical factors (such as hiatal hernia) may also contribute. Laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) can appear in younger individuals with hoarseness and chronic cough rather than classic heartburn. A practical strategy is to optimize meal timing and portions, stop eating late at night, reduce caffeine and carbonated drinks, and stabilize sleep. If symptoms are frequent, medical evaluation prevents prolonged discomfort and missed diagnoses.
